Recording the stories of Korean women who married American servicemen during and after the Korean War, and collecting the records they left behind.
What this project is about
Between 1950 and the decades that followed, thousands of Korean women emigrated to the United States as the wives of American servicemen following the Korean War. They were called Korean War Brides. They arrived into an unfamiliar country that often didn’t want or appreciate them. They learned to adapt into hostile communities, raised families, started businesses, and laid the groundwork for the Korean community that exists now.
Their stories are rarely recorded, and this part of history is often overlooked. This project sets out to record them directly and to gather the photographs, letters, and documents scoured around the internet into one digital archive.
