Interview with Sookja Green

Interviewed August 25, 2026 | Seattle, Washington | 46 minutes | In Korean with English translation

Speaking mostly in Korean, Sookja Green tells how she met her husband at the Embassy Club on Yongsan Garrison, leaving Korea, the racism she ran into in America and how she answered it, and raising a son who is both Korean and American.

Background

Sookja Green was born Sookja Lee in Korea in 1955. Her father worked on a US Army base, and she grew up around the American soldiers who visited their home. After her family’s fortunes collapsed she left university and worked as a pianist, and in 1987, at the Embassy Club on Yongsan Garrison, she met Brent Green, an Army JAG officer. They married in May 1988 and she came to the United States that June. For the next two decades the Army moved them every few years, to Virginia, Georgia, back to Korea, Hawaii and Arizona.
